LimeWire shutdown precipitates filesharing decline?

P2P firm LimeWire shut down in October last year, after losing its court battle against music industry rightsholders. NPD Group has now put out some numbers on the impact this shutdown has had on filesharing in the US. NPD describes a ‘precipitous’ decline, yet its headline stats focus on 16% of US internet users using P2P in Q4 2007, versus 9% in Q4 2010 after LimeWire closed.

Billboard has a more telling stat – the percentage was 12% in Q3 2010, so the drop was significant. NPD says that in Q4 last year, there were 16 million P2P users downloading music, down from 28 million in Q4 2007. “Limewire was so popular for music file trading, and for so long, that its closure has had a powerful and immediate effect on the number of people downloading music files from peer-to-peer services and curtailed the amount being swapped,” says NPD’s Russ Crupnick. What the stats don’t show is how many of those people have switched to legal services, rather than getting their music from cyberlockers or unlicensed streaming sites.

Ames Brothers – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town Video

Ames Brothers – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town Lyrics
You better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, Im tellin you why
Santa Claus is comin to town
Hes makin a list and checkin it twice
And gonna find out whos naughty or nice
Santa Claus is comin to town
He sees you when youre sleeping
He knows when youre awake
He knows if youve been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, Im tellin you why
Santa Claus is comin to town
With the little tin horns and little toy drums
Roody-toot-toots and rummy-tum-tums
Santa Claus is comin to town
And the curly haired dolls that toddle and coo
Elephants, boats and kiddy cars too
Santa Claus is comin to town
The kids in girl and boy land
Will have a jubilee
Their gonna build a toyland town
All around the Christmas tree
So, you better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, Im a-tellin you why
Santa will be peepin
Kiddies better be sleepin
Santa Claus is comin to town…

Rebecca Black’s Friday has likely earned more than $200k

Digital Music News has been analysing the likely revenues for ‘Friday’, the vanity video that became a viral hit for US teenager Rebecca Black. It calculates that the track has made more than $198,685 from YouTube ($102k) and iTunes sales ($96,685) alone, plus more revenues from downloads and ringtones sold by the song’s creator Ark Music Factory, and performance royalty income for TV and radio plays. What’s unknown for now is how the money is being split between Black herself and Ark, although the two are reportedly at loggerheads over the ownership of the song. Separately, Billboard is reporting that musical drama Glee is going to use ‘Friday’ in an upcoming episode, continuing the track’s rise to prominence.

Reactions to Amazon’s cloud music service come pouring in

We reported yesterday on Amazon’s surprise launch of a cloud locker service for music. Yesterday saw an array of reactions from rivals, rightsholders and analysts. We’ve picked out a few key ones.

Sony Music was first to criticise the launch: “We are disappointed that the locker service that Amazon is proposing is unlicensed by Sony Music,” a spokesperson tells Billboard, while Reuters has a quote from Sony’s Liz Young saying “We hope that they’ll reach a new licence deal, but we’re keeping all of our legal options open.” However, Hypebot quotes one label source as saying “It’s about time someone did this and we’re just glad it’s not Apple. It will push other negotiations forward.”

Amazon’s director of music Craig Pape hopes the launch hasn’t damaged Amazon’s relationships with labels. “We’re trying to solve a customer pain point that affects how much people buy digital music. And we’re doing this to grow the business… We’re trying to make purchased music more valuable. And we think that’s good for everybody.”

What about rival cloud services? TechCrunch suggests that Amazon’s service “has made it extremely difficult for MP3tunes and mSpot to compete with them” based on a feature/price comparison. Unsurprisingly, MP3tunes boss Michael Robertson disagrees, highlighting features of his own service unmatched by Amazon, but also stressing the legal implications. “I must admit, it’s great to have a giant corporate ally in the battle against the record labels that are fighting against user’s storing their personal music libraries online.”

Finally, Forrester’s Mark Mulligan weighs in saying that the rights issues aren’t the most interesting thing about Amazon’s cloud launch, saying it’s just the first step in establishing “a strong post-CD role for its music customers”, with more ambitious cloud music services to come.

Billboard launches Billboard On Tour live music app

We reported on MTV’s launch of a personalised live music listings app earlier this month, providing competition for UK startup Songkick’s popular iPhone app. Now there’s another established media company weighing in to this space: music industry brand Billboard.

It’s just launched an app called Billboard On Tour, which popped up in iPhone’s App Store last night, and is also available for Android. “Find out where your favorite bands are playing with the Billboard On Tour App. View tour dates, create a list of favorites, share listings with your friends,” explains its store listing.

The app also appears to offer videos, a fan wall and news. A bit of Googling uncovers the fact that Billboard is using Mobile Roadie’s platform to power the app, which is free to download.

Ames Brothers – TAMMY Video

Ames Brothers – TAMMY Lyrics
I hear the cottonwoods whisprin above
Tammy! Tammy! Tammys in love!
The ole hootie owl hootie-hoos to the dove
Tammy! Tammy! Tammys in love!
Does my darling feel what I feel
When he comes near?
My heart beats so joyfully
Youd think that he could hear!
Wish I knew if he knew what Im dreaming of!
Tammy! Tammy! Tammys in love!
Whippoorwill, whippoorwill, you and I know
Tammy! Tammy! Cant let him go!
The breeze from the bayou keeps murmuring low
Tammy! Tammy! You love him so!
When the night is warm, soft and warm
I long for his charms!
Id sing like a violin
If I were in his arms
Wish I knew if he knew what Im dreaming of!
Tammy, Tammy, Tammys in love!

Ames Brothers – Melodie dAmour Lyrics
Melodie damour, take this song to my lover
shoo shoo little bird, go and find my love
melodie damour, serenade at her window
shoo shoo little bird, sing my song of love
oh tell her I will wait, if she names a date
tell her that I care, more than I can bear
for when we are apart, how it hurts my heart
so fly oh fly away and say that I hope and pray
this lovers melody will bring her back to me
melodie damour, take this song to my lover
shoo shoo little bird, go and find my love
melodie damour, serenade at her window
shoo shoo little bird, tell her of my love
Oh tell her how I yearn, long for her return
say I miss her so, more than she could know
for when we are apart, how it hurts my heart
so fly oh fly away and say that I hope and pray
this lovers melody will bring her back to me
melodie damour, serenade at her window
shoo shoo little bird, tell her of my love.

Andrew Sisters – Shoo-Shoo Baby Video

Andrew Sisters – Shoo-Shoo Baby Lyrics
Youve seen him up and down the avenue
And now hes wearin the navy blue
She had a tear in the corner of her eye
As he said his last – goodbye…
Shoo-shoo-shoo baby, shoo-shoo-shoo baby
Bye-bye-bye baby, doo-dah-doo-day
Your pappas off to the seven seas
Do-ont cry baby, do-ont sigh baby
Bye-bye-bye baby, doo-dah-doo-day
When I come back well live a life of ease
Seems kind of tough now
To say goodbye this way
But pappas gotta be rough now
So that he can be sweet to you another day
Bye-bye-bye baby, do-ont cry baby
Shoo-shoo-shoo baby, doo-dah-doo-day
Your papas off to the seven seas
Shhh-shoo baby, do-dah-doo-day
Shhh-shoo baby, do-dah-doo-day
Shhh-shoo baby, shoo-shoo
Wait a minute, I want a little bit of quiet in the house, please
She wants a little bit of quiet in the house
My papas on his way across the seven seas
So dont you cry-hy, dont you sigh, goodbye
Now shoo-shoo baby, shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo
